Traveler in the Northeastern Night

Cortney Ives
Take the driftwood sleeper car express
over the swelling Allegany foothills
and sway in on the wash
with the beach glass
in cool Lake Erie.
Open the window of your coach
and let the clouds in
as you cut up the Canadian midnight.
And, in the softness of the night
skirt the cityscape
and Toronto's pretty lights.

As your steam engine slows
and the gray watercolour wash
seeps up the east above the cedars
dip your toes in Algonquin's lakes.
Breath deep dear dreamer
and stoke your engines for home.
I'll be in the kitchen making coffee,
pulling back the curtains,
letting the day in with the cat.
